Belgrade is one of those cities that doesn’t immediately try to impress you—but ends up being one of the most memorable. Set at the meeting point of the Sava River and Danube River, it has a kind of layered energy—gritty in places, beautiful in others, and always alive. There’s a mix of history, nightlife, and everyday life that feels very real, and once you settle into it, the city starts to open up in a way that’s hard to replicate.
A lot of that history is still very present. Start at Kalemegdan Fortress, which sits right above the rivers and offers some of the best views in the city. It’s been destroyed and rebuilt countless times, and now feels more like a park where people gather, walk, and watch the sunset. From there, you can continue into the Museum of Yugoslavia, which gives a deeper look into the country’s more recent past and adds context to everything you’re seeing around you.
Food in Belgrade is simple, hearty, and very satisfying. You’ll find dishes like ćevapi—grilled meat served with bread and onions—and sarma, slow-cooked cabbage rolls, almost everywhere. It’s not overly complicated, but that’s part of the appeal. Meals are meant to be shared, stretched out, and paired with rakija, the local fruit brandy that shows up at just about every table.
As the day turns into night, the city shifts in a big way. Belgrade’s nightlife is one of its defining features, and it ranges from low-key bars to full nights that don’t really end. Skadarlija has more of a classic, bohemian feel, with cobblestone streets and live music spilling out of restaurants, while Savamala leans more modern, with a mix of art spaces, bars, and clubs that feel a little more current.
What balances all of that is how close you are to nature. The rivers aren’t just something to look at—they’re part of how people spend their time here. Ada Ciganlija, an island on the Sava, is where locals go to walk, bike, swim, or just spend the day outside. It’s an easy escape from the city without really leaving it.
