Explore the Oaxaca Coast (Puerto Escondido, Zipolite & Mazunte)

written by John Philp April 22, 2025

If you’re looking for an escape filled with pristine beaches, breathtaking sunsets, and a relaxed, bohemian vibe, the Oaxaca coast is calling your name. Stretching along Mexico’s Pacific shoreline, this region is famous for its surf-friendly waves, hidden coves, and a slower pace of life that lets you truly unwind. Whether you’re chasing the perfect wave, seeking out untouched nature, or just looking to soak up the sun with a cold drink in hand, the Oaxaca coast has a little something for everyone!

After our time in Oaxaca City, we flew to the Oaxaca Coast for some very solid chill-time in the beach towns of Puerto Escondido, Ziploite and Mazunte! The best time to visit the Oaxaca coast is between November and April, when the weather is dry, sunny, and not unbearably hot. We were there the first week of April and it was kind of perfect – not too many tourists were around as the season was winding down!  If you’re a surfer, summer (May to September) brings bigger waves, though it’s also the rainy season, so expect occasional heavy downpours. No matter when you go, the ocean is warm year-round, making it an ideal Mexiccan beach destination.

The easiest way to reach the Oaxaca coast is by flying into Puerto Escondido (PXM) or Huatulco (HUX) and then making your way along the coastline. If you’re coming from Oaxaca City, you can take a small domestic flight (around 30 minutes) on Aerotucan or brave the winding mountain roads by car — about a 3-4 hour drive. Once you’re on the coast, “colectivos” (shared taxis), moto-taxis, and rental scooters are the best ways to hop between the beaches and towns.

Puerto Escondido: The Surf Capital

Puerto Escondido is the biggest and most bustling town on the Oaxaca coast, famous for its world-class surfing and energetic nightlife. Zicatela Beach is legendary for its massive waves, attracting pro surfers from around the globe. If you’re not up for surfing, you can still enjoy the scene from one of the many beachfront bars and restaurants. For a more relaxed vibe, head to La Punta, a chilled-out area with boutique hotels, smoothie bars, and a more beginner-friendly surfing waves. If you want to experience something magical, take a nighttime boat tour to the nearby Manialtepec Lagoon, where you can witness bioluminescent plankton glowing in the dark waters.

Puerto Escondido, meaning “Hidden Port,” was historically a small fishing village before growing into a tourism hub. Despite its increased popularity, the town still retains its authentic coastal charm, with local markets, street food vendors, and a mix of both high-end resorts and backpacker-friendly stays.

To eat:

  • Fish Shack (La Punta) – Fresh, no-fuss fish tacos and ceviche right by the beach—perfect for a chill lunch after a surf or swim. A must for lunch!
  • Terraza Molli – Great brunch/lunch spot with a breezy rooftop vibe—think chilaquiles, smoothies, and solid coffee.
  • Agua Salá – Awesome dinner spot with a mix of seafood and Mexican dishes—cool setting and cocktails to match.
  • Kakurega Omakase – Hidden gem sushi experience—intimate, elevated, and totally worth the splurge if you’re into omakase-style dining. Located in Hotel Escondido!
  • Almonaduz – One of the few Michelin-recognized spots here—creative, refined dishes with local ingredients. Definitely more of a treat-yourself kind of meal.
  • Atarraya – Also Michelin-recommended—laid-back beachfront vibes but with seriously good food. Get the grilled catch of the day.
  • Helados Palma Negra – Stop here for the dreamiest popsicles—tropical flavors, artisanal vibes, super refreshing on a hot day.
  • La Morena – Casual seafood spot with a fun local crowd—nothing fancy, just good vibes and fresh plates.
  • Espadín Restaurant – Come for the food, stay for the view—this place is perched up high with a killer sunset view over the beaches.
  • La Principal Cantina de Mar – Trendy cantina-style seafood with great cocktails—feels like the place to pregame dinner or hang out for a while.
  • Restaurante Santa Fe – Old-school charm with ocean views—classic menu, solid for a sunset dinner that feels a bit more traditional.
  • Kelly’s Café – A delightful place for breakfast, offering great coffee, fresh juices, and a variety of dishes. The welcoming atmosphere and attentive staff make it a must-visit.
  • El Cafecito – Total classic—you have to go at least once for breakfast. Huge portions, fast service, and everyone goes there for a reason!
  • Bananas – Italian-meets-seafood, super chill spot with good pasta and fresh fish. Easy dinner that always hits.
  • Food Market La Punta – Fun food court-style setup with like 6 different restaurants—great if you’re with a group and everyone wants something different.
  • Piyole (Punta Zicaleta) – Relaxed spot in Zicatela with casual Mexican eats and cold drinks—perfect for a low-key lunch or early dinner.
  • Lychee (La Punta) – Thai-Japanese fusion in a tropical garden setting—cozy, flavorful, and a fave if you want something a little different.

To drink:

  • Café Olé – (Punta) – coffee spot
  • Gallo – A stylish mezcal bar in La Punta, known for its curated selection and ambient setting—great for a relaxed evening.
  • Chavez – Lively spot in La Punta offering a vibrant atmosphere and a variety of drinks, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
  • Cobarde – cocktails
  • Bruja Bar – Located in Zicatela, this bar offers a mix of good music and a laid-back vibe, perfect for a night out.
  • Punta Vida – A popular beachside bar in La Punta, ideal for sunset drinks and socializing with fellow travelers.

To do:

  • Visit Casa Wabi
  • Visit the Benito Juárez Market for fresh produce, local crafts, and traditional Oaxacan dishes.

Zipolite: Mexico’s Only Official Nude Beach

If you’re looking for a place that embodies the essence of freedom, Zipolite is it. Known for its laid-back, anything-goes vibe, Zipolite is Mexico’s only official nude beach. This stretch of golden sand attracts a mix of backpackers, free spirits, and LGBTQ+ travelers who come to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and stunning ocean views. Be sure to check out Playa del Amor, a small hidden cove with a peaceful, secluded feel. At night, the beach transforms into a lively scene with bonfires, beach bars, and an eclectic mix of travelers swapping stories under the stars.

Historically, Zipolite was a quiet fishing village that gradually became a hotspot for alternative travelers in the 1960s and 70s. The name Zipolite is said to come from the Zapotec language, possibly meaning “beach of the dead,” though its origins remain debated. While the town retains its rustic charm, tourism has brought more boutique hotels and guesthouses, though you’ll still find plenty of budget-friendly palapas and beachfront cabanas. One surprising element — be cautious in the ocean! Zipolite’s waves can be powerful, and rip currents are common, so swim only in designated safe areas. Twice we witnessed people having to be rescued by the lifeguards due to the waves and riptide.

Here are my quick-tips for Zipolite:

  • Move is the in-town gym
  • do a mezcal tasting at Mezcaleria Gota Gorda
  • every day around 5, walk along the beach and head to the gay cove ‘Playa del Amor’ for sunset and a fire show
    • after dark, there is an area in the back left by the rocks that turns into a “darkroom vibe”
  • great  exican dinner at Sal y Pimienta
  • have to do Thai one night at Mao Mau– incredible!
  • our favorite mezcaleria on the beach is Uhuru – this woman who owns it is a witchy alchemist and makes amazing blended Mezcal drinks

Mazunte: A Bohemian Paradise

A short 20-minute ride from Zipolite, Mazunte is a small but vibrant coastal village known for its eco-friendly spirit, yoga retreats, and stunning sunsets. This is the perfect place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and embrace the barefoot lifestyle. Don’t miss a visit to Punta Cometa, a rocky outcrop that offers the best sunset views on the coast—it’s worth the short hike. Mazunte is also home to the National Mexican Turtle Center, where you can learn about sea turtle conservation efforts and even witness baby turtles being released into the ocean.

Mazunte has a strong history of turtle fishing, which was once the community’s primary industry. However, in the 1990s, after Mexico banned turtle hunting due to declining populations, the town reinvented itself as an ecotourism hub. Today, conservation efforts thrive, and the town has become a haven for sustainable tourism, alternative healing practices, and artisan crafts.

To eat:

  • Restaurant Tadeo– This is one of my favorite spots in Mazunte—super chill and right by the beach. The seafood is fresh (get the shrimp quesadilla!) and the vibe is always easygoing.
  • La Baguette – Perfect stop for a quick breakfast or snack. The croissants and sandwiches are fresh and flaky—grab one to-go and hit the beach. Mazunte – This one’s on the fancier side, but totally worth it if you want a nice dinner out. Everything feels thoughtful—from the food to the cocktails to the vibe.
  • Luz del Sol – Great lunch spot if you’re looking for something light and healthy. They have smoothie bowls, veggie burgers, and really friendly staff.
  • La Empanada – Not actually known for empanadas—go for the wood-fired pizza! Cozy, casual, and they usually have live music on Sundays which is super fun.
  • Los Poblanitos – This place is super local and super delicious. Tacos are cheap, fast, and totally hit the spot after a beach day.
  • TRIBU Mazunte – Casual, backpacker-friendly place that’s great for tacos and a cold drink. It’s always lively and easy to hang out for a while.

To drink:

  • La Bodega – Such a great spot to grab a drink in the evening—laid-back atmosphere, cold beers, and sometimes live music. It’s got that perfect “local hangout” energy.
  • Cometa Café – If you’re serious about your coffee (or just need a solid caffeine fix), Cometa’s the place. The espresso is strong, the pastries are tasty, and it’s a great place to chill or get a little work done.
  • La Mezcaleria – Tiny but mighty mezcal bar with a great selection and super knowledgeable staff. Perfect if you want to try a few different mezcals and learn what you like—plus, it’s a vibe at night.
  • El Tiburón Juice Bar– This is your go-to for smoothies or fresh juices after the beach. Everything’s super fresh, and they have some great combos (I loved the mango + ginger one). Total beach town refresh.
