When moving back to New York City last year, my roommate Erik and I fell into an apartment with a pretty incredible feature — an outdoor space! I never expected an outdoor space in my ‘NYC apartment deck of cards,’ but we jumped at the chance to grab this gem of NYC real estate! After finally furnishing the terrace, we’ve been maximizing our use of the space and taking full advantage of this summer weather! It was towards the end of fall when we moved into our apartment, so we didn’t really get a chance to use the terrace before the weather turned cold. All winter we imagined how we were going to utilize the space in the warmer months and started sourcing furniture and pieces for the terrace. To fill this space and make it our own was going to be quite the challenge. I had spent more than enough time scouting furniture for my NYC apartments over the years, but have never once glanced at the outdoor furniture category. And let me tell you – it’s a whole other world… I didn’t know where to start! When it came to landscaping the space, we needed some greenery and plants – STAT. With our concrete floors and grey walls, the terrace was feeling a bit bland and Brutalist. Of course, my first call was to my buddy Nick – you could say my friend Nick is pretty much THE plant guy. Nick is a “plantrepreneur,” passionate about all things green. He spends his time as a plant coach, landscaper, and TV personality (catch him on Netflix’s Instant Dream Home!). We installed planters on both ends of the terrace and put some beautiful Arborvitae Elegantissima in them to help block the dividers with our neighbors on either side. They’re evergreens and will thrive on the terrace all year long! We have a good mix of perennials and some tropicals – like a bird of paradise, which we’ll bring inside during the winter months – that gives some diversity to the greenery on the terrace. The greenery adds so much life to the terrace and totally transformed the vibe! If you’re looking for somebody to help spruce-up your outdoor space, don’t hesitate to give nick a shout!
