City Guide: Sydney

written by John Philp January 9, 2019

Koalas, kangaroos, and brekkie for days—don’t let the long flight scare you off from heading Down Under. Sydney has quietly become one of my favorite cities I’ve ever visited, with its sun-soaked beaches, laid-back energy, and those little under-the-radar spots that end up being the highlight of your trip.

There’s also a deeper history to Sydney that adds another layer to the experience. Long before it became the city it is today, this land was home to the Eora Nation, whose culture and connection to the harbor stretch back tens of thousands of years. You still see glimpses of that heritage throughout the city, whether through guided walks, art, or protected cultural sites. Sydney as we know it today began in 1788 with the arrival of the First Fleet, marking the start of modern Australia—but that layered history is very much still present.

Culturally, Sydney feels like this perfect mix of British influence, coastal living, and global diversity. There’s a strong appreciation for the outdoors, a bit of that surf culture woven into daily life, and a food scene shaped by influences from across Asia and Europe. It’s stylish without trying too hard, and there’s an ease to how people move through the city that makes it incredibly appealing.

I’ve been back three times now, spending the last few New Years in Bondi Beach with Brett and his family, which honestly feels like the best possible way to experience the city. Sydney revolves around its harbor—the kind of place that instantly grounds you. The Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge sit right at the center of it all, but what’s so special is how seamlessly they blend into everyday life. Ferries glide by, people run along the water, and somehow these world-famous landmarks just become part of the backdrop.

The coastline is what really makes Sydney unforgettable. It’s dotted with hidden coves, long stretches of golden sand, and some of the most scenic coastal walks I’ve done anywhere. Days naturally fall into this rhythm—morning swims, long walks, a stop for coffee, then doing it all over again. It’s such an outdoor city, and that lifestyle shapes everything. There’s a casualness to it, but it’s paired with a level of quality that’s hard to beat—especially when it comes to food.

And the food surprised me in the best way. Sydney’s dining scene is incredibly diverse, but it’s the café culture that really stands out. Aussies take “brekkie” seriously—like, really seriously. Think perfectly poached eggs, fresh sourdough, and yes, the famous avocado toast (or “avo smash”), which they’ve absolutely perfected. It’s the kind of place where even a quick coffee stop turns into a full, lingering meal.

After a few trips (and a lot of requests), it finally felt like time to put together this guide. So here it is—everything I’ve come to love about Sydney, and all the spots worth knowing before you go.

John Philp Thompson Blogger Menswear New York Influencer Sydney Australia John Philp Thompson Blogger Menswear New York Influencer Sydney Australia Brekkie:

  • Bill’s (Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Bondi) – A Sydney institution and the definition of a classic “brekkie” spot—light-filled, always buzzing, and known for doing the simple things perfectly (ricotta hotcakes, scrambled eggs, great coffee).
  • Shuk Bondi (Bondi) – One of my favorites—an Israeli café with bold, fresh flavors and a menu that goes way beyond your typical breakfast. Go for the full Israeli breakfast or shakshuka (add halloumi), and don’t skip the sweet potato fries. There’s also a bakery a couple blocks away that’s worth the detour.
  • Harry’s (Bondi) – A laid-back neighborhood spot that feels very local—known for its avocado tahini toast, fresh juices, and a menu that leans healthy without being boring.
  • The Shop (Bondi) – A tiny Bondi gem for great coffee and easy brekkie bowls—seating is limited, so expect a bit of a wait, but it’s worth it.
  • Lock, Stock & Barrel (Bondi) – A super solid, all-around spot with a bigger menu and great energy—go for something fresh like the raw veggie salad or an avo smash, and if you’re leaning into it, the Bloody Mary or Pink Aperol is the move.
  • The Rusty Rabbit (Paddington) – A cozy, tucked-away café in Paddington with a slightly more relaxed, neighborhood feel—great for a slower breakfast and consistently good coffee.
  • Porch & Parlor (North Bondi) – A North Bondi favorite with a breezy, beachy vibe—come here for a long, easy breakfast, great coffee, and a menu that feels fresh and elevated without trying too hard.
  • Blair St. Dairy (Bondi) – Small, low-key, and very Bondi—everything is solid, but the chocolate chip cookies are the kind you end up thinking about later.
  • Lyfe Cafe (Bondi) – A vibrant Israeli café with Mediterranean-inspired dishes, colorful plates, and a menu that feels both healthy and really satisfying.
  • Bourke Street Bakery – A Sydney classic—perfect for a more casual grab-and-go brekkie (pies, pastries, great coffee), and an easy add to any morning in Surry Hills.

Coffee:

  • Swell (Bondi) – A relaxed, beachside café with a true Bondi feel—great for a post-swim coffee or an easy brekkie with fresh, unfussy dishes and ocean air just steps away.
  • Cafe Holm (Paddington) – A Scandinavian-inspired café that feels calm, minimal, and design-forward—come here for beautifully plated, lighter dishes and a more elevated, slower-paced breakfast.
  • Bondi Hall (Bondi) – A lively all-day spot that leans more social—bigger space, great energy, and perfect for a long brunch that easily turns into drinks with a group.
  • Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters – Arguably the best coffee in the world—literally ranked #1 globally in 2025. It’s a full coffee experience: roasting, tasting, and watching baristas at work.
  • Ruben Hills (Surry Hills) -A must for coffee + food—globally inspired menu, but the coffee is the real star. A bit more of a destination café.
  • Mecca Coffee (CBD) – One of the pioneers of Sydney’s specialty coffee scene—minimalist, refined, and focused purely on quality.
  • Paramount Coffee Project (Surry Hills) – Design-forward, slightly more elevated, and consistently excellent coffee—feels very “cool Sydney.”
  • Regiment (CBD)
  • Single O – An OG in Sydney’s coffee scene—if you want to understand why Australia does coffee better than most places, start here.
  • Only Coffee Project -A newer, minimalist spot that’s already one of the best in the world (#4 globally). Precision, detail, and seriously good espresso.
  • Heart Cafe (Bondi) – A cozy, health-forward café with a focus on nourishing, feel-good food—smoothie bowls, great coffee, and a menu that keeps things light but satisfying.
  • A.P. House – A rooftop bakery-meets-café that’s worth going out of your way for—amazing pastries, great coffee, and one of those spots that feels very “in the know.”

To Eat:

  • Manly Greenhouse (Manly) -One of my favorite new spots from this trip—set right across from Manly Beach with a fun rooftop and great energy. Perfect for drinks with a view that easily turns into a long lunch or dinner.
  • Mamasan (Bondi) – A go-to in Bondi when you want something a little more elevated—Asian fusion, great cocktails, and a fun, stylish dinner vibe just off the beach.
  • Bondi Hardware (Bondi) -A Bondi classic with a laid-back courtyard feel—great for group dinners, cocktails, and one of those easy nights that turns into staying longer than planned.
  • Three Blue Ducks (Bronte) – Fresh, seasonal, and right by the beach—perfect for a slower, feel-good meal after a morning at Bronte. Everything feels clean, simple, and really well done.
  • Coogee Pavillion (Coogee) – A huge, multi-level spot right on the water with something for everyone—rooftop drinks, casual food, and a super fun, social atmosphere.
  • Bangkok Bites (Bondi) – My favorite casual Thai in Sydney—fast, flavorful, and always hits when you want something easy but really good.
  • Hotel Ravesis (Bondi) – That iconic pink corner in Bondi—perfect for drinks, people-watching, and soaking up the beach scene.
  • La Piadina (Bondi) – A quick, casual stop for Italian flatbreads with creative (and really good) fillings—simple, delicious, and perfect between beach and plans.
  • The Bondi Juice Co. (Bondi Junction) – A go-to for smoothies, juices, and lighter bites—perfect for a quick reset when you want something fresh and easy.
  • The Boathouse (Manly) –  A must-stop if you’re doing the walk to Shelly Beach—perfect for a relaxed lunch right on the water.
  • Watson’s Bay Boutique Hotel – I’ve spent New Year’s Day here the last two years and it’s easily one of my favorite spots in Sydney—great food, drinks, and one of the best views back toward the city.
  • Sushi Train (Bondi, Bondi Junction) – Best quick sushi on a conveyor belt—so fun, easy, and I’m fully obsessed with the aburi.
  • Ms. G’s (Darlinghurst) – A fun, high-energy dinner spot with bold Asian flavors—perfect for sharing plates and a lively night out.

  • The Apollo (Surry Hills) – Fantastic Greek food in a sleek, lively setting—consistently one of the best meals in Sydney.
  • Anita (Bondi, Chippendale) – My favorite gelato in the city—yes, it might be controversial with Messina fans, but this one takes it for me.
  • Mr. Wong’s (CBD) – A true Sydney staple—go for the steamed buns, roast duck, and a classic, always-busy atmosphere.
  • Totti’s (Bondi Beach) – A Bondi favorite—come for the famous wood-fired bread, stay for simple Italian plates and a great courtyard vibe.
  • The Golden Sheaf (Double Bay) – A classic with one of the best outdoor garden spaces—perfect for drinks, especially on a sunny afternoon.
  • Establishment (CBD) – A polished CBD spot that works for everything from after-work drinks to a full night out.

  • Pasta Shop (Potts Point) A casual Italian spot focused on handmade pasta and classic flavors—approachable, consistent, and ideal for an easy, no-frills dinner.
  • BESA (Bondi) – A warm, intimate tapas bar with a Spanish influence—expect well-executed small plates, strong cocktails, and a cozy, low-lit setting that works just as well for dinner as it does for a late drink.

To Drink:

  • The Charlie Parker (Paddington) – A hidden speakeasy tucked beneath Fred’s—low-lit, intimate, and known for beautifully crafted cocktails that feel thoughtful and seasonal.
  • Paddo Inn (Paddington) – A classic Paddington pub with a polished edge—great for an easy drink, a solid meal, and that relaxed, neighborhood feel.
  • The Paddington (Paddington) – A stylish, multi-level venue that leans a bit more elevated—perfect for drinks that turn into dinner in a sleek, design-forward space.
  • The Beresford (Surry Hills) – A go-to in Surry Hills with a beautiful outdoor courtyard and an upstairs dancefloor—especially fun on Sunday for gays!
  • This Must Be The Place (Paddington) – A small, cozy wine bar with a warm, slightly retro feel—great for a quieter drink and a more intimate night out.
  • Unicorn Hotel (Paddington) – A laid-back, slightly divey pub that stays open late—easy, unpretentious, and always a good fallback spot for drinks.
  • The Light Brigade (Paddington) – One of my favorite rooftops in Sydney—great views, good drinks, and an easy spot for sunset that carries into the night.
  • Palmer & Co. (CBD) – A prohibition-style bar with moody interiors and classic cocktails—feels like stepping into another era, in the best way.
  • The Lobo Plantation (CBD) – A rum-focused cocktail bar with a tropical, Havana-inspired feel—great for something a little different, with an extensive rum list.
  • Shady Pines Saloon (Darlinghurst) -A wild west–style dive bar with character—strong drinks, a bit chaotic, and always a fun, slightly unpredictable night.
  • Henry Deane (The Rocks) – A rooftop bar with sweeping harbor views—ideal for a more polished drink with one of the best backdrops in the city.
  • Bedouin (Double Bay) – A lively, Middle Eastern–inspired lounge that leans into a late-night atmosphere—great for drinks that turn into dancing.
  • Stitch Bar (CBD) – A hidden, basement bar tucked down a back alley—vintage feel, great cocktails, and one of those spots you could easily miss if you didn’t know it was there.
  • Bar Bridge (CBD) – A newer Martini bar from one of Sydney’s best bar groups—minimal, sexy, and very much a late-night, industry crowd kind of spot.

To Shop:

  • Venroy (Bondi, Paddington) – One of my favorite brands—effortless, elevated essentials that perfectly capture Sydney’s laid-back linen and athleisure aesthetic.

  • Harrolds (CBD) – A go-to for luxury menswear with a modern edge—mixing designer labels with a slightly streetwear-inspired feel.
  • RM Williams (CBD) – An Australian classic known for handcrafted chelsea boots and timeless pieces—more heritage, but worth it for something iconic.
  • Bassike (Paddington, Bondi) – Elevated Australian essentials with a focus on premium fabrics and clean silhouettes—minimal, but done really well.

To See/Do:

  • Sydney Opera House – Probably the city’s most iconic building! Grab a drink at the Opera Kitchen and soak in the view! I don’t think you need to do a tour through the Opera House as you can get pretty up-close. The best views are from a ferry in the harbor!
  • Royal Botanical Gardens – Great to take a stroll through… it’s right next door the Sydney Opera House and it’s free!
  • Bondi Iceberg Pools – Iconic  Sydney. Great place to grab a drink and enjoy the view.
  • Taronga Zoo
  • Shop at the  Queen Victoria Building – Beautiful late 19th-century building that now houses some great shopping. Head to the Westfield Mall too if shopping in the CBD!
  • The coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee – A must! Start in Bondi and end with lunch and/or a spritz at Coogee Pavillion. It took us about an hour and a  half!
  • Day Trips
    • Palm Beach – Drive an hour drive north of Sydney to enjoy a hike up to the Palm Beach Lighthouse (it took us about 30 minutes) then grab lunch at The Boathouse or stop at The Newport on the way back into town!
    •  Manly – Take the Fast Ferry from Sydney Harbor to Manly. It’s about a 20-minute ride with amazing views of Sydney Harbor! I’d recommend doing the Coastal Wak from Spit to Manly – Uber to Spit when you arrive in Manly, then take the coastal walk back. Online it says 3 hours, but we managed in about an hour and a half. Be sure to enjoy lunch at Hugo’s on the wharf and drinks at Manly Greenhouse after! You can go to Manly Beach or Shelly Beach!
    • Blue Mountains – Great hikes, about & hour and 20 minutes outside of the city.
  • Beaches: Bondi Beach, Camp Cove Beach, Bronte Beach, Milk Beach, Tamarama Beach, Parsley Bay Beach
  • Jardan – beautiful Interior design furniture store
  • Spice Alley (Chippendales) – Tucked behind Kensington Street, it’s home to 6 Asian eateries

To Stay:

  • QT Bondi (Bondi Beach) – A stylish, apartment-style stay just steps from the beach—perfect for leaning fully into the Bondi lifestyle, with great design, space to spread out, and everything (coffee, walks, restaurants) right outside your door.
  • The Old Clare Hotel — (Chippendale) A converted heritage building with a cool, design-forward feel—rooftop pool, great restaurants, and easy access to Surry Hills without being in the middle of the CBD.
  • Capella Sydney (CBD) – One of the nicest hotels in the city right now—set in a beautifully restored heritage building with a more refined, luxury feel. Quiet, polished, and a great escape from the busier parts of downtown.
  • W Sydney (Darling Harbour) – More modern and high-energy—bold design, great views, and a rooftop pool scene that feels a bit more social.

John Philp Thompson Blogger Menswear New York Influencer Sydney Australia Sydney is the kind of city that stays with you long after you leave. It’s not just the beaches or the harbor or even the food—it’s the rhythm of it all. The way mornings start slow with coffee, afternoons are spent by the water, and nights unfold effortlessly without ever feeling rushed. It’s easy, it’s beautiful, and it somehow makes you feel like you’ve tapped into a better way of living.

Whether it’s your first trip or your third, Sydney has a way of pulling you back in—there’s always another coastal walk, another café, another perfect day waiting. And once you fall into its pace, it’s hard not to wonder why life everywhere else doesn’t feel a little more like this.

Stay Risky,

– John
