City Guide: New York City (updated!)

written by John Philp August 2, 2022

Wow. New York City was once a pipe dream—and somehow, it still feels a little surreal to say I live here. A year in, and I’m still catching myself in those small moments: walking home at golden hour with the skyline hitting just right, grabbing a last-minute dinner at a place people wait weeks for, or realizing that what used to feel like a “trip” is now just… a Tuesday.

With more than 60 million people visiting each year, this has easily been one of my most-requested guides—and I wanted to do it right. New York reveals itself slowly. It’s layered, constantly shifting, and impossible to fully “complete.” So while this only scratches the surface, these are the places, moments, and rhythms that have defined my first year living here.

Living here has been everything I hoped for and more. The energy is addictive—you feel it the second you step outside. There’s this constant hum of movement, ambition, creativity. You can have a quiet coffee on a tree-lined block in the West Village in the morning, and by night you’re downtown, squeezed into a candlelit bar that feels like the center of the universe. The convenience is unmatched, the food scene is relentless (in the best way), and the people—more than anything—are what make it.

New York is massive, but it shrinks quickly once you find your circle. The friendships I’ve built here have made the city feel intimate in a way I didn’t expect. It’s a place where everyone is chasing something, and there’s something really special about finding your people in the middle of all that motion.

There’s also a kind of magic in knowing the history beneath your feet. This city has been reinventing itself for centuries—from its early days as New Amsterdam in the 1600s to becoming the global capital it is today. The grid system you walk every day dates back to the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, designed to bring order to what was once a chaotic, growing island. Neighborhoods like SoHo transformed from industrial warehouse districts into some of the most sought-after blocks in the city, while places like the Lower East Side still carry the layered stories of immigration, culture, and reinvention that define New York at its core.

And then there’s how you move through it all—which, in many ways, is the New York experience. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (the MTA) is the lifeblood of the city, running 24/7 and connecting every corner in a way that feels chaotic at first, but eventually becomes second nature. There’s something very “New York” about hopping on a downtown train without thinking twice, or catching the express and shaving 15 minutes off your commute like it’s a small personal victory.

Yellow cabs—iconic, a little unpredictable, and somehow always there when you need them—are still one of the best ways to move around, especially late at night when the city feels cinematic. And of course, rideshares like Uber make everything seamless, especially if you’re just here for a weekend and don’t feel like decoding subway lines.

I’ve broken this guide down by neighborhood because that’s really how New York is meant to be experienced. It’s a city of micro-worlds—each with its own pace, personality, and rhythm—and the best days here are usually the least planned. You wander, you pivot, you follow a recommendation that turns into your new favorite spot.

If you’re visiting, I’d say don’t overthink it. Walk more than you think you should. Say yes to last-minute plans. Pop into places that catch your eye. And when in doubt, grab a cab, head downtown, and let the night take you where it wants.

Gay Bars:

  • Stonewall Inn (West Village) – The most iconic gay bar in the world and the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. It’s equal parts history and celebration—always worth stopping in, even just for one drink.
  • Pieces (West Village) – High-energy, a little chaotic (in the best way), and known for its drag shows and dancing. It’s one of those places where the night can get away from you quickly.
  • Julius‘ (West Village) – One of the oldest gay bars in NYC, with a more low-key, old-school vibe. Great if you want something a bit more relaxed but still steeped in history.
  • Duplex (West Village) – A classic piano bar moment—expect live singing, Broadway energy, and a crowd that’s fully in on it. It’s fun, theatrical, and very New York.

  • Industry (Hell’s Kitchen) – One of the largest gay clubs in NYC with multiple levels, DJs, and packed dance floors. It’s more club than bar—great for a full night out.
  • Club Cumming (East Village) – Quirky, artsy, and a little unexpected, with cabaret, performances, and a very downtown crowd. It’s less about dancing, more about the vibe.
  • Metropolitan (Williamsburg) – A laid-back Brooklyn staple with a great backyard and strong drinks. It’s easy, unpretentious, and perfect for starting (or ending) the night.
  • 3 Dollar Bills (Williamsburg) -A massive queer venue with everything from drag shows to full-on raves and outdoor space. It’s one of the most dynamic nightlife spots in the city right now.
  • Animal (Williamsburg) – A newer Williamsburg spot with a sleek, high-energy feel that leans a little more elevated than your typical night out. Great music, a stylish crowd, and the kind of place that easily turns from “one drink” into staying all night.
  • Art Bar (Chelsea) – A cozy, slightly under-the-radar spot with eclectic decor, cheap drinks, and a surprisingly great back garden. It’s relaxed, a little quirky, and perfect if you want a more low-key night that still feels very New York.

  • The Ludlow Hotel (Lower East Side) – Cozy but elevated, with incredible skyline views from many of the rooms. It captures that gritty-meets-refined Lower East Side energy so well.
  • The Bowrey Hotel (Lower East Side) – Dimly lit, romantic, and a little bit cinematic—it’s one of the coziest spots in the city for a drink or a stay. Feels like stepping into old New York with a downtown crowd.
  • The Standard – East Village  (East Village) – Sleek, modern, and floor-to-ceiling windows everywhere, so you’re basically waking up in the skyline. It’s a younger, more energetic vibe with great views.
  • The Marlton (West Village) – Small rooms, but that’s not the point—you’re here for the charm. It feels like a perfectly designed Parisian-style hideaway right in the West Village.

  • Williamsburg Hotel (Williamsburg) – Bright, stylish, and right in the middle of Williamsburg’s best spots. The rooftop pool in the summer is a major draw.
  • The Wythe (Williamsburg) – Industrial Brooklyn done right, set in a converted factory with tons of character. The Manhattan views from the upper floors (and bar) are unreal.
  • The Standard – Highline (Meatpacking) – Iconic for a reason, with its glass façade sitting right over the High Line. It’s lively, a little scene-y, and perfect if you want to be in the center of it all.
  • 9 Orchard (Dimes Square) – Set inside a restored Beaux-Arts bank building, Nine Orchard feels equal parts grand and intimate, with soaring ceilings and beautifully detailed rooms. It’s one of the most refined new openings downtown—quietly luxurious, but still rooted in the character of the neighborhood.

The city meets you where you are, and then somehow keeps expanding just beyond that. There’s always a new street to wander down, a reservation to chase, a moment you didn’t see coming. And that’s exactly what makes it so special.

A year in, I still feel like I’m just getting started. But that’s the beauty of it—New York never gets old, it just gets deeper. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, the city has this way of pulling you in and making you feel like you’re part of something bigger.

So take this guide as a starting point, not a checklist. Let the city surprise you. Get a little lost. Find your own version of New York—and trust that it’ll be completely different (and just as good) as mine.

Stay Risky,

– John
