Exploring Antigua

written by John Philp December 18, 2025

This island has that effortless glow—sun-drunk beaches, turquoise water that looks filtered (but isn’t), and a relaxed, head-tilting charm that makes you seriously consider never returning your rental car. Whether you’re here for a long weekend reset or a full-blown sun-soaked escape, Antigua is the kind of place that takes your shoulders out of your ears the minute you land.

Antigua has 365 beaches (yes, literally one for every day of the year), so the math is already in your favor. Spend the morning on a quiet stretch of white sand where it’s just you and the sea, then shift to a livelier bay with music drifting over the water by lunchtime. Add in friendly locals, rum punches that could double as truth serum, and sunsets that look like someone dialed up the saturation—and you’ve got an island that’s pure good vibes.

There’s really no bad time to show up in Antigua—she’s that friend who’s always in a good mood. But for the best version of the island, aim for December through April. This is peak season for a reason: the weather is dry, breezy, and warm-but-not-scorching—the kind of climate that makes you want to spend every waking hour outside.
If you prefer things quieter (and cheaper), May to June is the sweet spot: fewer crowds, perfect temps, and still well before hurricane season. Late summer and early fall are the wettest months, but if you’re chasing deals and don’t mind a quick tropical shower or two, you’ll be rewarded with some of the island’s best rates.

Antigua isn’t huge, but it’s just big enough to make transportation a thing you should think about. The easiest move is to rent a car—the freedom is unmatched, and you’ll want to beach-hop on your own schedule. Just remember: they drive on the left, and roundabouts are everywhere (go slow and commit to your choices).
If you’re not into driving, taxis are plentiful and friendly, and many hotels will help coordinate rides. There’s also a network of local buses—cheap, cheerful, and a total vibe if you’re not in a rush. Boat taxis and private charters are another fun option for exploring hidden coves or neighboring islands; think of them as Antigua’s aquatic Ubers, just with more sunshine and better views.John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger John Philp Thompson Antigua Caribbean Travel Blogger

To Eat:

  • Catherine’s Cafe – One of the island’s most stylish beachfront experiences. Elegant French cuisine paired with loungers, rosé, and an effortlessly chic crowd.
  • *Loose Cannon (at English Harbour) – A lively beach bar with personality. Expect good music, strong drinks, and a fun crowd that keeps things moving. Get the Jerk Chicken skewers
  • * Lemongrass – A refined, Asian-inspired spot that feels quietly elegant without being stuffy. The flavors are fresh and thoughtful, making it a great choice when you want something a little elevated after a long beach day.
  • *MAIA Restaurant – This is Antigua’s special occasion restaurant—and it delivers. Seasonal, beautifully plated dishes, an intimate atmosphere, and service that makes the whole evening feel intentional and memorable.
  • *KOYA – Sleek, modern, and very cool. KOYA blends Asian flavors with a contemporary edge, making it a great spot for a stylish night out and a cocktail-forward dinner.
  • *Shirley Heights – More than a restaurant—it’s an experience. Go for sunset, stay for the steel drums, barbecue, and sweeping views over English Harbour that might be the best on the island.
  • Sukullduggery– A dockside classic where drinks flow fast and the vibe is always lively. It’s the kind of place you stop for one and end up staying all night—especially if espresso martinis are involved.
  • Celan Food ‘N Joose – Bright, fresh, and perfect when you want something nourishing that still feels like a treat. Think juices, bowls, and light bites that balance out all the indulgence elsewhere.
  • Bar-B’s – Beloved local BBQ spot serving smoky, flavor-packed plates that don’t mess around. Casual, bold, and exactly what you want when you’re craving something hearty.
  • Smiffy’s – A comforting slice of British pub culture in the Caribbean. Ideal for a casual dinner when you want familiar flavors and a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Famous Mauro’s – Casual pizza spot with serious attention to detail. Perfect for an easy dinner that still feels satisfying after a long beach day.
  • Cloggy’s (at the Catamaran Club) – Sailing-club charm with elevated food and a buzzy atmosphere. Great seafood, polished service, and a crowd that makes lunch feel like an event.
  • *Colibri – Romantic garden setting with French-Caribbean flair. Perfect for date night or when you’re in the mood for refined dishes and well-crafted cocktails. Highly recommend their passion fruite daqueri!
  • Paparazzi – Marina-front Italian restaurant with lively energy and reliable classics. A great place to linger over pasta and soak in the harbor views.
  • Jacke’s Kwick Stop – Simple, fast, and full of local flavor. Ideal for a quick bite when you’re exploring the island and need something satisfying on the go.
  • Los Cabrones – Unexpectedly strong Mexican option on the island. Tacos are flavorful, margaritas are cold, and the vibe is always fun.
  • Lobster Shack – Laid-back beachfront spot specializing in fresh, simply prepared lobster. Casual, scenic, and very Antigua.
  • Trappas – A long-time favorite for good reason. Cozy, welcoming, and serving consistently great dishes that appeal to everyone at the table.
  • Bumpkins – Chill beachside dining with simple, tasty food and cold drinks. Ideal for an unhurried afternoon by the sea.
  • Boom Restaurant (at The Admiral’s Inn) –

To Drink

  • UP bar – A must for golden hour with panoramic views. The sunsets are dramatic, the cocktails are polished, and it’s worth timing your visit just right.
  • 2SIX8 Craft Brewery Taproom -A fun change of pace from rum-based cocktails. Small-batch beers, relaxed atmosphere, and a local crowd.
  • Abracadabra -High-energy bar that’s perfect for a late night out. Music is loud, drinks are strong, and the crowd is always lively.
  • Galley Bar -Casual dockside spot with sailing-club energy. Easygoing, social, and perfect for a low-key drink by the water.
  • Seabreeze Café – A go-to for relaxed breakfasts and easy lunches with ocean views. Great coffee, fresh plates, and that laid-back energy that sets the tone for the rest of your day.

Coffee:

  • *You & Me Cafe – Warm, friendly, and easygoing with food that feels homemade in the best way. Perfect for a casual breakfast or lunch when you want something comforting and unfussy.
  • Diced – A refreshing reset when you’re craving something clean and balanced. Custom bowls packed with protein and flavor, ideal between beach hopping and cocktail hours.

To Do:

  • Visit Stingray City – Gentle stingrays glide past you like friendly underwater puppies.
  • Shirley Heights Lookout – Come for the iconic view, stay for the steel drums, barbecues, and rum-fueled dance floor.
  • Beaches:
    • Galleon Beach
    • Pigeon Beach
    • Darkwood
    • Dickenson Bay
    • Half Moon Bay – A wild, cinematic stretch of sand where the waves show off a bit.
  • Nelson’s Dockyard – UNESCO-designated, historic, and sailing-obsessed.

Stay:

I stayed at The Inn at English Harbour and truly already can’t wait to get back. Tucked above English Harbour, it’s elegant without being stuffy—whitewashed cottages, terracotta roofs, and stunning ocean views of the harbour.  It’s the kind of place you book when you want your vacation to feel quietly iconic. It feels grown-up, romantic, and effortlessly refined. The property’s lobby and suites are perched atop the English Harbour and it also offers poolside suites and beach cabanas – so you can choose the room that’s just right for the occasion.

This is a hotel that’s perfect for slow mornings, days at the tranquil Galleon beach and sundowners with a view. Every morning I looked forward to breakfast at the beachside restaurant and laying on the beach hammocks that pepper the beach and afternoons by the pool somehow stretched on forever .The location of the property is also so great — close enough to the action in English Harbour, but far enough away that it feels like your own private escape.  It’s peaceful, polished, and ideal if you want Antigua at its most serene!

It’s barefoot luxury with a little island mischief, postcard views with real character, and a guaranteed sun-kissed glow that appears by day two. About Me

About Me

Hey y'all! I'm John Philp Thompson, an NYC-based (but Texas born) photographer, model, blogger, list maker & risk-taker. I started this site as a destination for my city guides and to share some style tips along the way. I'm hoping to bring you all things menswear, travel, and fitness... and everything in-between!
