Exploring Aruba

written by John Philp July 20, 2026

Whenever I think about Aruba, my shoulders instantly relax. I can almost feel the warm trade winds, picture that unreal turquoise water, and remember just how easy life felt for a few days. Before this trip, I’d always thought of Aruba as a beautiful beach destination—but I left realizing it’s so much more than that.

One of the first things that struck me was just how easy Aruba is to explore. Mornings started slowly with coffee from Santos Coffee With Soul or pastries from T2Pan Sourdough Boutique, followed by Dutch pancakes (and way too many poffertjes) at The Dutch Pancakehouse. By lunchtime, we’d traded the café scene for the beach, enjoying fresh seafood with our toes in the sand at Passions on the Beach before spending the afternoon hopping between Palm Beach, Eagle Beach, and the colorful streets of Oranjestad. The beaches are every bit as beautiful as you’ve seen online—powder-soft white sand, crystal-clear water, and a constant breeze that somehow makes every day feel like the perfect beach day.

But what really surprised me was everything beyond the coastline. We spent a day exploring Arikok National Park by Jeep, winding through towering cacti, dramatic cliffs, hidden caves, and Aruba’s famous Natural Pool. It’s a side of the island that completely changed my perspective. By evening, we’d traded hiking shoes for dinner reservations, enjoying one unforgettable meal after another. Wilhelmina quickly became a favorite for its romantic garden setting and creative menu, while Papiamento, tucked inside a historic Aruban cunucu house, delivered one of the most memorable date nights of the trip. Aruba has a way of making every meal feel like an experience rather than just another reservation.

The food scene ended up being just as memorable as the beaches. Whether it was a simple coffee in the morning, a casual lunch overlooking the ocean, or an elegant final dinner at GAIA House of Grill, every meal reflected a different side of the island. Aruba’s cuisine feels like its culture—a blend of Caribbean, Dutch, and Latin American influences that somehow comes together effortlessly. It’s the kind of place where you’ll happily spend one night at a family-run café and the next enjoying beautifully plated fine dining, both equally worth your time.John Philp Thompson Travel Aruba John Philp Thompson Travel Aruba John Philp Thompson Travel Aruba John Philp Thompson Travel Aruba John Philp Thompson Travel Aruba John Philp Thompson Travel Aruba John Philp Thompson Travel Aruba John Philp Thompson Travel Aruba John Philp Thompson Travel Aruba

To eat:

  • The Old Man and the Sea – Start your morning with breakfast right on the water, where your table is practically in the sand. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and one of those places that instantly puts you in vacation mode.
  • The Dutch Pancakehouse – If you only have one pancake breakfast in Aruba, make it this one. Their Dutch pancakes are absolutely worth the hype, and this ended up being my favorite breakfast spot on the island. And be prepared for a line!
  • Diana’s Pancake Place – Another fantastic breakfast option with huge portions and plenty of sweet and savory pancake choices. I personally preferred The Dutch Pancakehouse, but you really can’t go wrong here.
  • * Eduardo’s Beach Shack – I was genuinely obsessed with this place. Grab an açai bowl or smoothie and take it straight to the beach—it became one of my favorite breakfasts of the entire trip.
  • Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s Bar & Restaurant – This colorful waterfront spot is exactly what you picture when you think of a Caribbean lunch. Order a frozen drink, soak up the marina views, and stay longer than you planned.
  • Big Mama’s Grill – A casual little beach shack serving fresh seafood just steps from the water. It’s simple, local, and one of the best places to grab lunch after spending the morning at the beach.
  • *Passions on the Beach – This was hands-down one of my favorite lunches in Aruba. The poke was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had, and I’m still thinking about the key lime pie—plus you’re dining with your toes in the sand.
  • Barefoot Restaurant – Another incredible beachfront dinner where you’re literally eating on the sand as the sun sets. The atmosphere is unbeatable, and the food completely lives up to it.
  • *Zeerovers – If you want an authentic local experience, don’t skip Zeerovers. You pick your fresh seafood, grab a table overlooking the water, and enjoy one of the best lunches on the island.
  • The West Deck – A fun waterfront restaurant with great Caribbean flavors and beautiful ocean views. It’s an easy lunch spot that’s relaxed, affordable, and always delivers.
  • Wilhemina – If you’re looking for one of Aruba’s best dinner experiences, put Wilhelmina at the top of your list. The garden setting is beautiful, and every dish feels a little elevated without being stuffy.
  • *Papiamento Restaurant – Dining inside a historic Aruban home surrounded by tropical gardens makes this place feel incredibly unique. It’s romantic, full of character, and one of the island’s most iconic restaurants.
  • *GAIA – If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful restaurants in Aruba, GAIA absolutely deserves a reservation. The space is stunning, the Mediterranean-inspired menu is incredible, and the whole experience feels elevated while still capturing the laid-back spirit of the island.
  • Flying Fishbone – This place is famous for a reason—you can literally dine with your feet in the water. Go around sunset for one of the most memorable dinner experiences on the island.
  • Amore Mio Pizzeria – You know I had to test the pizza in Aruba. This spot totally delivered with wood-fired pies, great cocktails, and a lively atmosphere that’s perfect for a casual dinner.
  • Madame Janettes – A longtime Aruba favorite that’s always buzzing for dinner. The menu has something for everyone, and it’s one of those restaurants people return to every trip.
  • Papillion – A cozy French-Caribbean restaurant that’s perfect for a date night. The food is elegant, the service is fantastic, and the atmosphere feels special without being over the top.
  • * Screaming Eagle – One of the most unique restaurants on the island, known for its intimate atmosphere and creative menu. If you’re celebrating something special, this is a great pick.
  • El Gaucho – Come hungry because the steaks here are the star of the show. It’s an Aruba institution that’s been serving some of the island’s best cuts for decades.
  • Ritz-Carlton – Even if you’re not staying at the Ritz, it’s worth stopping by for sushi at their sushi bar. Fresh fish, ocean views, and a beautiful setting make it one of my favorite upscale dinners on the island.
  • Azar Open Fire – Everything here is cooked over an open wood fire, giving every dish incredible flavor. Between the cocktails, atmosphere, and food, this ended up being one of my favorite dinners in Aruba.

Cafe & Bakery:

  • *T2Pan Sourdough Boutique – If you’re a bread lover, you have to stop by T2Pan. Their fresh sourdough, buttery pastries, and artisan baked goods make it one of the best breakfast stops on the island. I had one of the best palmiers at this bakery. Everything was delicious!
  • Gelatissimo Bistro – I tried a lot of ice cream in Aruba, and this was hands-down my favorite. The gelato is incredibly creamy with tons of flavors to choose from—it’s the perfect treat after a day at the beach.
  • Huchada Bakery – A local favorite that’s perfect for grabbing fresh pastries, traditional baked goods, and a quick breakfast. It’s one of those authentic neighborhood spots that gives you a taste of everyday Aruba.
  • *Santos – This quickly became one of my favorite coffee stops on the island. Great espresso, a welcoming atmosphere, and the perfect place to ease into a slow Aruba morning.
  • *Eduardo’s – I seriously couldn’t get enough of this place. Their açai bowls, smoothies, and fresh juices are the ultimate beach breakfast, and I found myself coming back more than once.

To drink:

  • Charlie’s Bar & Restaurant – One of Aruba’s most iconic bars, Charlie’s is packed floor-to-ceiling with decades of memorabilia and island history. Grab a cold drink, take in the quirky atmosphere, and don’t forget to wander around—you’ll notice something new everywhere you look.
  • Ritz-Carlton Bar – For a more elevated cocktail experience, head to the Ritz-Carlton bar. It’s the perfect place to sip a handcrafted drink while watching the sunset over Palm Beach in a beautifully relaxed setting.
  • MooMba Beach Bar – If you’re looking for the ultimate toes-in-the-sand beach bar, MooMba is it. Live music, frozen cocktails, and an unbeatable beachfront location make it one of the most fun places to spend an afternoon or watch the sunset.
  • Bugaloe – This is an absolute must while you’re in Aruba. Built on a pier over the water in the High-Rise area, Bugaloe has what I honestly think are the best views on the island—whether you’re stopping in for drinks, lunch, or sunset, you won’t regret it.
  • Battata Beach Bar & Food – A laid-back beachfront hangout that’s perfect for a casual lunch or sunset cocktail. Grab a drink, order something fresh, and enjoy one of those classic Aruba beach days.

To stay:

  • The Ritz-Carlton – If you’re looking for a classic luxury resort, The Ritz-Carlton is hard to beat. Beautiful beachfront, exceptional service, and some of the best restaurants and cocktails on the island make it worth the splurge.
  • Boardwalk Boutique Hotel – This colorful boutique hotel feels like a hidden tropical oasis just minutes from Palm Beach. With private casitas, lush gardens, and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s one of the most charming places to stay in Aruba.
  • Divi & Tamarijn – If you’re after an easy all-inclusive vacation, Divi and Tamarijn are two of Aruba’s best options. Sitting side-by-side on beautiful Druif Beach, they offer unlimited dining, gorgeous sunsets, and a relaxed Caribbean vibe.
  • Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort – Located on the incredible Eagle Beach, Bucuti & Tara is one of the most romantic resorts on the island. Adults-only, peaceful, and consistently ranked among the Caribbean’s best hotels, it’s perfect for couples looking to truly unwind.
  • Hyatt Regency – The Hyatt Regency is right in the heart of Palm Beach, making it easy to walk to restaurants, bars, and shopping. With beautiful pools, a lively atmosphere, and direct beach access, it’s a fantastic choice if you want to be in the center of the action.

Aruba gave me exactly what I didn’t know I was looking for: a chance to slow down without ever feeling bored. Yes, the beaches are some of the best I’ve ever visited, but it’s the combination of incredible restaurants, welcoming locals, rugged natural landscapes, and relaxed island pace that makes Aruba so special. I arrived expecting a beautiful Caribbean beach vacation. I left with a completely different appreciation for the island—and already planning my return. Bon bini, Aruba. Until next time.

Stay Risky,

– John
