This blog has lived many lives before arriving here. But we shouldn’t worry about that – I’m just glad you’re both finally getting acquainted. The Risky Jackal has been housed on a few platforms and carried different meanings along the way ~ all that matters is the here & now.
I’m John Philp Thompson, a Chicago-based photographer, model and( now) blogger. I’ve grown and learned a lot the past few years ~ enough to know that I don’t know shit. This new chapter for myself and the Risky Jackal has been a long-time comin’.
The name originally came from two of my favorite movies – Risky Business and The Day of the Jackal – and has stuck as pseudonym of sorts. At first it was just a title of my Tumblr Blog, but as I grew I found myself becoming more adventurous and risky with opportunities that came my way. I moved to a city which I had never been to before (and didn’t know anyone), then quit my secure and full-time job to pursue my passion. At it’s core, Risky Jackal is an extension of things that I’m interest me the most: men’s style, traveling, fitness, food + drink and music. It’s a little corner of the internet that can I can dwell in and call home for the time being. I promise to bring you interesting + quality content, to listen + engage, and to not take myself too seriously. This is going to be a fun & bumpy ride, so I hope you’re wearing your seatbelt!
Here’s a video that is near & dear to me and all about beginnings. It’s Ze Frank‘s initial video when he launched his YouTube channel and he tackles “the art of beginning” quite wonderfully. I have a poster of this video’s transcript hanging in my apartment (it’s one of the very few things on my walls) and try to watch the video whenever I am about to start a new project, endeavor or just about anything new ~ enjoy below!
Stay risky,
– John
