Nestled on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Cartagena is a city that effortlessly combines a rich colonial history with breathtaking natural beauty. With its colorful streets, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture, this coastal gem offers an enchanting escape for travelers seeking history, romance, and adventure. Join us as we embark on a journey through Cartagena’s captivating charm.
Your Cartagena adventure begins in the heart of the city—the Old Town, also known as the Walled City (Ciudad Amurallada). This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts cobblestone streets, vibrant colonial architecture, and charming plazas. Lose yourself in the maze of narrow alleys, and you’ll discover hidden courtyards, boutique shops, and bustling cafes.
Don’t miss the chance to explore the iconic Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a massive 16th-century fortress that once protected the city from pirates and invaders. Climb its formidable walls for panoramic views of Cartagena’s skyline and the Caribbean Sea. Just outside the walls of the Old Town lies the lively neighborhood of Getsemaní. Known for its street art, live music, and vibrant street life, this area provides an authentic Colombian experience. Wander through its colorful streets and soak in the lively atmosphere, or enjoy a meal at one of the many local eateries serving traditional dishes. As the day draws to a close, take a leisurely stroll along the Bayside Promenade (Malecón), a scenic pathway offering panoramic views of Cartagena’s bay and skyline. Sunset in Cartagena is a magical experience, with the pastel hues of the sky reflecting off the Caribbean waters.
Cartagena is also a gateway to nearby islands, offering beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. Consider a day trip to the Rosario Islands or Isla Barú for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxation in a tropical paradise. These pristine islands are a haven for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Cartagena’s culinary scene is a feast for the senses. Savor the flavors of Colombia with dishes like arepas, empanadas, and ceviche. Don’t forget to try the local seafood, such as fried fish and coconut rice. Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Colombian coffee in one of the city’s many cozy cafes for a taste of Cartagena’s rich coffee culture. If you’re in Colombia for just a few days, I’d recommend grabbing some Colombian coffee and pastries at: Epoca, Brioche, San Alberto, or La Esquina del Pandebono! And for dinner, be sure to head to: Celele, Candé, Mar y Zielo, or La Cevicheria for an elevated Colombian dining experience! In Cartagena, the night comes alive with music and dance. The city’s nightlife is vibrant and diverse, offering everything from salsa clubs to live music venues. Join the locals on the dance floor and let the rhythms of Colombia move you. Some of our favorite cocktail bars were: Alquímico, Café Del Mar, and El Baron
