Nestled in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, Aspen is not only renowned for its pristine slopes but also for the fun & fabulous après-ski culture. Beyond the excitement of downhill adventures, Aspen’s après-ski history is a fascinating narrative, reflecting the evolution of European ‘Aprés” with a uniquely American take! The après-ski atmosphere in Aspen is more than just a post-ski gathering; it’s a celebration of the day’s achievements, a sharing of stories, and a testament to the enduring spirit of winter sports. The town’s historic charm, combined with the energetic vibe of après-ski, creates an atmosphere that is both timeless and ever-evolving.
The roots of Aspen’s après-ski culture can be traced back to the Alpine regions of Europe, where skiers sought refuge from the cold in mountain huts and lodges. As skiing gained popularity in the early 1940s, these intimate post-ski gatherings began to shape the social fabric of Aspen, fostering a sense of camaraderie among winter enthusiasts.
Post-World War II, Aspen experienced a transformative period, evolving from a quaint mining town into a world-class ski resort. Embracing the après-ski tradition, the town’s establishments started to reflect the warmth and conviviality that characterized European mountain villages. Rustic lodges and cozy bars became the backdrop for post-ski revelry, creating a unique fusion of Old World charm and American hospitality. As Aspen’s skiing reputation soared, so did its après-ski offerings. The town’s cultural scene expanded to include live music, themed events, and culinary experiences that complemented the skiing lifestyle. Après-ski in Aspen evolved into a diverse and inclusive tradition, becoming an integral part of the overall winter experience.
Skiing in Aspen is a combination of 4 mountains: Aspen “Ajax” Mountain, Snowmass Mountain, Buttermilk Mountain, and Aspen Highlands. Each is unique and has its own character that draws in skiers and snowboarders alike! All of these mountains have mountain-side lodges that serve breakfast + lunch for skiers – Bonnies & Sundeck on Ajax, Sam’s on Snowmass, and the iconic Cloud 9 on Aspen Highlands! Some of these pit stops double as great mountain-side aprés ski destinations in the afternoons (usually open until 3:30pm). In town, the aprés scene is a bit more elevated than on the mountains. Ajax Tavern boasts the best burger, fries, and location for aprés as it’s located at the base of the iconic Aspen gondola! If you’re looking for a fun & wild side for aprés, check out Chica and The Snow Lodge at The St. Regis as the post-ski party is always happening there! Buttermilk:
- Cliffhouse (on Buttermilk Mountain) – At the top of Buttermilk with panoramic views of the dramatic Pyramid Peak and the entire Maroon Creek Valley is Cliffhouse. The make-your-own Mongolian BBQ pairs well with a fresh made juice — you pick your fruit!
