The City of Lights, the City of Love. If you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time admirer, Paris has a way of just stealing your heart. From the ornate buildings, quaint street corners, and sidewalk cafes to the swirling traffic around the Arc de Triumph and the glittering Eiffel Tower at night – Paris’ romanticism is intoxicating. There’s a reason 30 million foreign visitors flock to Paris each year – maybe we’re all just looking for love.
If you’re a first-time traveler to Paris, there are quite a few sights to see and things to do. You’ll have to: see the Mona Lisa at the Musée du Louvre, visit the Arc de Triomphe, play in the Palais Royal, picnic in the park at Jardin du Luxembourg, see the Eiffel Tower glitter in all of its glory, and catch a cabaret show at Crazy Horse! Then of course there’s all the quintessential French food that you’ll be diving into, headfirst. From croissants and baguettes to escargot and pâte, French cuisine is delicious and rich…and usually paired with a great cheese & wine!
I’ve traveled to Paris in every season, and my favorite might be in the fall. For me, it’s the first week of October that’s the sweet spot. It’s a little brisk with a slight breeze, the sun is out and the leaves are golden-orange. A cute coat is a perfect layer! Of course, summer is a great time but it also attracts so many tourists as it’s peak season. In October, there is a noticeable difference in tourism and the city definitely feels more “locals only” – which we love! Because say it with me, “we are travelers, not tourists! I’ve stayed at hotels while in Paris, but feel like I always gravitate towards staying at an Airbnb to get more of a local feel of the city. I enjoy staying in “le Marais” or the 3rd arrondissement, it has so many great restaurants and shopping options and is definitely my favorite neighborhood.
In Paris, people-watching is a sport — a spectator sport! And it all takes place at the cute pavement cafes and bistros that line the Parisian streets. I dedicated a whole section below for “Pavement Cafés” to highlight them. There’s something different about café culture in Paris. If you spot an open table on the sidewalk you can just park it right there, and shortly a waiter will be out to ask you for your order. They are pretty versatile in terms of what they offer: everything from a french breakfast, an afternoon aperitivo or dinner & late-night drinks! It’s impressive!
A quick lesson before we dive into Paris’ cafes, shops, and fine dining – we have to address Paris’ Arrondissements or “little cities.” These urban administrative districts each have a distinct character. As Paris grew from a small town centered around the islands, more municipal districts were required to administer the city. In the 1860s the city expanded in one giant gulp by incorporating nearby villages into the larger urban entity and creating the familiar twenty arrondissements. On the map it’s easy to see that the Paris arrondissements form a spiral, starting near the Louvre Museum with the 1st Arrondissement, running in a clockwise direction until the 20th Arrondissement hits the eastern boundary of the city.*
One of my favorite history-forward non-fiction books is How Paris Became Paris by Joan DeJean. It’s a fascinating read about how Paris truly became the first modern & magnificent city in the 17th and 18th centuries. If you want to get yourself amped up before a trip to Pairs, I’d highly recommend reading this!
I’ve jammed this city guide with quite a few options, but have a (*) by my favorites!! Also, because Paris is such a large, I’ve included the Arrondissement that each recommendation is in – I hope it helps you while coordinating your own itineraries!

If you’re traveling to Paris from New York City, I’d consider looking into booking a flight with La Compagnie! They’re an airline that flies between NYC and Paris with all-business-class planes. They make business-class travel more modern and affordable with prices half the typical cost of a business-class ticket! The experience was seamless and truly one of the better air travel experiences I’ve ever had! From the fast-track through airport security to the boarding process it was a breeze. The service on board was fantastic and I took full advantage of the lay-down beds and caught some great sleep on the way back to New York City! So I landed feeling very refreshed and ready to tackle the day. And they just added a new route, NYC to Milan!
Stay Risky,
