For my work-life, no two days are the same. I love structure and routine, but creating my own schedule and living on-the-go. I love the motto of having “No Same Days,” meaning no two days of your work are the same. Ever since leaving my full-time job, I’ve tried to be intentional about this. Since logistics play such a big part in my on-the-fly lifestyle, convenience is king. To say that Uber has been my godsend is an understatement, as I use the ride request app at least 3 times a day.
It’s hard to imagine a world where I wouldn’t be hopping in the back of an Uber en route to a shoot, meeting, or running errands around town. It’s hard to give you guys a peek into a day with me ~ but I’m going to try! If I’m not traveling, my Chicago-routine is pretty standard. Here’s a shot at a typical day in my shoes:
- Wake up at 6:30am
- Post daily quote, listen to Monocle Podcast while making breakfast + coffee
- Answer emails
- uberX to a shoot at 9:30am
- Edit and work from Intelligentsia, stoping by Plum Market to pick up some groceries at 4:30pm
- uberX Home at 5:00pm
- uberPOOL to drinks with friends at 5:30pm
I try and give myself enough time in the morning so that I’m not rushed. I’d rather wake up early and take my time, than be frazzled and rushing in the morning. After I make coffee, I’ll listen to my favorite podcast, Monocle’s The Globalist. It’s an hour of world news, and it’s been so refreshing (at least the past 6 months!) to get an outsider’s perspective of US politics/news. Around 9:30am I’ll have a shoot, that I’ll uberX to – It’s reliable and I know there’s always going to be quite a few around my apartment. The uberX option is so great because I know I’m heading to the client uninterrupted. From there I’ll head to a coffee shop and work from there for quite a few hours, editing and answering emails. One of my Favorite spots is the Intelligentsia in Old Town. It’s so great since it’s connected to Plum Market, where I’ll usually pick up some groceries from and take an uberX back home! Another added perk with uberX, is that you can split the fare with friends, which makes them affordable even more AFFORDABLE!
The ease of uberX amazes me. When you’re ready for a ride, just open the app and request one. During the ride, I love being able to share the status of my trip or ETA with friends or clients if I’m headed to a meeting. I’m also usually getting some work done from my phone or on a call, so I kinda use it as my secondary/mobile office! One thing that I don’t even think of anymore is how there isn’t an incurred tip with Uber – it isn’t required or expected!
Ever since uberPOOL has been released, I’ve been such a fan. It’s a great way to get where you need to get on the cheap, and make some friends along the way! After a full day of work ~ I’ll probably need a drink. So I’ll call an uberPOOL!
I hope you enjoyed the little insight into a day in my shoes! Let me know if you have a favorite Uber service that you use on a daily basis too!
Stay Risky,
– John
